How We Review Listings

Our editorial review process for listings on VanIsleLocal: what we check, the steps we follow, and what we intentionally do not verify.

VanIsleLocal reviews listings for local relevance, category fit, completeness, and suitability for a Vancouver Island-focused platform.

A "reviewed" listing means we have looked at the public information and decided it is a reasonable local fit for its claimed category. It does not mean we have independently confirmed the business's qualifications, licences, insurance, or quality.

What we review for

  • Local relevance. The business serves Vancouver Island or nearby Island communities. We prioritize Island-based operations with a real local address, service area, or community presence.
  • Category fit. The business belongs in the category or trade it claims. A plumber belongs in plumbing, a restaurant belongs in food and drink, and so on.
  • Information completeness. We look for a business name, operating area, contact or website, and a clear description of what the business does. Incomplete or placeholder profiles are sent back for more detail.
  • Platform suitability. We check that the profile is appropriate for a public, family-facing Vancouver Island business discovery platform. Content that is misleading, harmful, or off-topic is not accepted.

What we do not review for

  • Business licences, permits, or regulatory status
  • Insurance coverage or bonding
  • Professional certifications, credentials, or trade qualifications
  • Quality of work, service, or workmanship
  • Customer reviews, ratings, or testimonials
  • Rate or value claims

Review process

  1. A business applies or is identified by editorial research as a potential local fit.
  2. Our editorial team checks the public information against the review criteria above.
  3. If a profile is missing key details or does not fit the platform, we request clarification or decline it.
  4. Approved listings are published with a clear disclaimer that we do not verify credentials, licences, or insurance.
  5. Published listings remain subject to change. If a business closes, relocates, or no longer fits a category, we update or remove it.

Being reviewed for local relevance, category fit, completeness, and platform suitability does not mean a business is licensed, insured, certified, or otherwise officially checked by VanIsleLocal. We do not verify any of those. It only means the listing has been assessed against the platform's own criteria for local focus and relevance.

Always verify a business's qualifications, licensing, and insurance directly with them and with the relevant regulator before hiring.
